Media Autobiography
Before we start, I think a proper introduction is in order. My name is Shane McCambridge and i'm a psychology major. Mass media plays such a major role in the sculpting of society i was intrigued to get a little deeper look. As most kids my age, growing up i was bored by any sort of news coverage but loved reading magazines and listening to music on the radio. I used media mostly as a form of entertainment rather than for information or news. I've always had a pipe dream of being a news anchor, but more with a Ron Burgundy twist. I'm not very confident the news station would enjoy that as much as i would but hey, let a man dream. Of all eight types of mass media, reading books will probably consume the biggest piece on the pie chart although I do spend a good amount of time on the internet and listening to music. I also do go to the movies religiously and am a self proclaimed movie critic. I have a few issues with mass media in terms of how it's used but can admit it is probably the fastest, most affective way to get a message out to a large, diverse group of people. I think the advertisement industry is a moral mess and the particular ads being directed towards children rubs me the wrong way. I want you to go home and watch the news and comment on this post if you heard something positive or uplifting. I don't believe i'll get many comments but i'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised. Thank you for reading and i'm looking forward to a fun quarter with you all.

ReplyDeleteShane, this was WONDERFUL. If you actually start a blog after this class, I would definitely follow it. I agree with your opinion about the ads and messages they're sending to children, it's awful. I bet news stations would love to hire a man with a twist (way better than the boring guys they have on now). You've got a great writing style, it's very entertaining to read. I'm looking forward to a great quarter with you as well!
ReplyDeleteHey Shane! Small world indeed! I would have never thought I'd be seeing you after all these years, let alone in this class. We shall definitely catch up this quarter!
ReplyDeleteI think that it is awesome that you would like to become a news anchor! I occasionally watch the 5 o'clock news after Judge Judy (my guilty pleasure) and the news can be so bland and horrible sometimes. I think a Ron Burgundy type approach would definitely liven things up a bit. Heck, I'd watch it!
I agree with you that the mass media can pretty twisted in this day and age. Some of the things I see on TV or even on billboards is absurd, especially when young eyes are present. Some people really need to get their morals straight.
Anyway, I hope that this is a great quarter for you and I'm looking forward to this class as much as you are!
Talk soon.
Hi Shane! I really like how your response and view toward media is different than others. The way you enjoy books and movies says a lot about you, and I admire that you don't let technology dictate your life. I was surprised when you admitted that you don't have a Facebook in class, but it must be relieving not to be connected to everyone in your life at all times. Although I can see where you're coming from about the news getting you down, at some point it's about the fact that the news is what is happening around the world. This isn't always good, and the negative shown in the news is often to inflict a passion in news consumers' minds to make a difference. This can be positive in the long run! I enjoyed reading your blog-don't knock your writing! I'm interested to learn more about you this quarter.
ReplyDeleteYou read a lot dude which is a very good habit and I should learn this from you. and I agree with you that the advertisement industry is a real mess.Your positive attitude will make a news anchor for sure! Either i should be more thank full to you to post this blog and showing your capability.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love your writing style Shane! It made me smile and at many points throughout reading your blog, I caught myself nodding and agreeing with everything you've stated. Coming from a guy who was at first "nervous" for publishing his first blog, I for one saw this blog as if you have done this for years- you are a natural at this! I completely agree with you about how the media can influence and direct children in the wrong way with negative messages. I think its absolutely disturbing :(
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to read your next blog and see what you have to say! You did an amazing job Shane!
